AFFORDABLE HOUSING FOR LOWER MIDDLE INCOME GROUP
The idea of home draws from the simplicity of rural houses, where courtyards serve as shared spaces for interaction. In contrast, urban rental housing often lacks this sense of belonging due to high density and rising property costs.
The Affordable Housing Project at Dholpur, Savar—initiated by Build Bangladesh—aims to provide lower middle–income families with quality living environments within an achievable budget. Our proposal focuses on creating a true sense of “home” by introducing layers of urban voids and community spaces rather than limiting the design strictly to cost.
The project features a ten-storied building with around 90 modular units, including 38 two-bedroom apartments. Most units are placed within walkable height and oriented toward a central courtyard, which doubles as a playground. A sequence of internal voids connects vertically, forming lively communal spaces on multiple levels.
With careful climatic consideration and sustainable design features, the development recreates the openness, social connection, and comfort found in traditional countryside homes—within an affordable urban setting.
